Survival Purpose

The Schrade SCHF36 Frontier 10.4in stainless steel, full tang fixed blade knife with 5in drop point is a great field knife. It is highly rated and reviewed.

We put ours to the test. We've whittled and chopped wood, scraped a magnesium block (made us cringe to dull the edge), cut paracord, cut meat and vegetables, and more. It held its edge very well (except on the magnesium scrapings) and was straight forward to sharpend again with the sharpening stone that came with it. The included ferro rod is long but thin.

Overall, for the price the knife and accessories are a great value. The 1095 powder coated high carbon steel blade is sturdy and the knife is well balanced. Choking up on the drop point blade for detailed usage is a synch with the finger choil. We consider it ideal for Stage 2 bug out bags. Compare it to the Ka-Bar fixed blade knife. Each has weight, price, and accessory considerations.

This tool can tackle many of the survival priorities. It can help you build shelter, prepare food, administer first aid, prepare fuel for burning, cut cordage, and so much more. It's just the right size to keep its weight minimized while providing the best function.

What's Included

  5. Lanyard

What We Like

  • Survival Fit - In the field this knife performs very well - it's balanced, holds a great edge.
  • Sturdy - The 1095 carbon steel runs the length of the knife and has a thick spine and body.
  • Blade - The blade holds a great edge and sharpens easily with the stone or with a pull through tool. We also like the straight edge with no serrations.
  • Choil - The finger choil lets you choke up for great control.

Tips and Recommendations

  • Use as intended - while the tool is sturdy, use it wisely. The blade work great as a blade but not so well as levers.
  • Be safe - all open blades are a liability. Cuts and other injuries may occur if you don't use it correctly.
  • Go-Bag - include the knife in your go bag for emergency situations. While the knife adds weight to a pack, the tradeoff is worth it because of the field functions.
